Eduardo Perez Diaz’s fight with Mathew Soto at the Coliseo Roger Mendoza in Puerto Rico was completely overshadowed by a controversial boxing move, leaving Jake Paul’s ex-trainer calling for Diaz to be banned.
The contest between the pair took place on the undercard of Jan Paul Rivera and Andy Beltran on October 11 but despite Soto winning via comfortable unanimous decision, the discussion was not about his performance.
Perez looked to almost win the bout, promoted by Most Valuable Promotions, when he knocked the Sugar Kid down, but instantly did serious damage to his reputation when the Cuban went in to strike him again whilst he was on the floor.
The illegal punch led to loud boos and jeers from the gathered audience, angry at the lack of sportsmanship, as Jake Paul’s former trainer, B.J. Flores called for him to be banned from boxing.
“Immediate disqualification and 1 year ban,” Flores wrote on an Instagram post showing the incident, in which Soto is clearly on his back and clearly knocked down when Perez goes to hit him again.
For his transgression, the Latino was deducted a solitary point instead of being disqualified and forfeiting the fight by default. That left other fans annoyed, with the one point deduction being the least serious penalty the referee could have given.
One fan wrote, “deducted 1 point?? that’s a whole DQ bro at least 2 points.”
A second added, “Supposed to be DQ’ed baby.”
And a third commented, “Shouldn’t have an offer to fight again.”
Perez himself is currently yet to speak out on the situation to explain why he hit a fighter on the deck, who was so clearly unable to defend himself and wasn’t looking to throw any punches back.
When is Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson?
Flores’ ex-client, Jake Paul, is currently preparing for his next boxing fight when he will take on Iron Mike Tyson on November 15.
The bout at the AT&T Stadium, in Arlington, Texas, will be broadcast by Netflix and will mark the 58-year-old Tyson’s first professional fight since 2005 when he retired via a loss to Kevin McBride despite leading on the scorecards.
