It’s official! The Indianapolis Colts have signed 44-year-old Philip Rivers to their practice squad. Rivers is currently one of 26 modern-era semifinalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2026 and hasn’t played a single NFL snap since the 2020 season.
The Colts are giving Rivers a chance after Daniel Jones suffered a season-ending Achilles injury during Week 14’s loss to the Jaguars, and Anthony Richardson remains on IR with an orbital fracture.
For now, it looks like Rivers is going to be a backup option for undrafted rookie Riley Leonard, who replaced Jones against the Jaguars. Leonard is dealing with knee soreness, and the Colts are uncertain about his availability this week.
Brett Favre, the first grandpa to play in the NFL
Rivers became a grandparent last year after his eldest daughter, Halle, gave birth to a boy. With that in mind, many fans were impressed by a grandparent playing in the NFL.
But he’s actually the second one to do it. Back in 2010, when Brett Favre was with the Minnesota Vikings, he became a grandpa after his daughter Brittany gave birth to Parker Brett.
Meet Philip Rivers’ 10 children and grandson
Philip Rivers and his wife, Tiffany, have been married since 2001 and share 10 children: 7 daughters and 3 sons.
