Charlotte Hornets star LaMelo Ball will sit out the rest of the 2024-25 NBA season to undergo medical procedures addressing persistent ankle and wrist issues, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported Friday. The news comes after Ball reportedly played through significant pain in recent weeks before opting for surgery to prioritize long-term recovery.
The 23-year-old guard has been a standout for the Hornets this season, averaging a career-high 25.2 points per game alongside 7.4 assists and 4.9 rebounds in 47 starts. However, his ongoing struggles with injuries have limited his availability, marking another season overshadowed by health setbacks.
Ball’s injury history has been a recurring theme throughout his career. The All-Star fractured his right wrist during his rookie season in 2020-21, requiring surgery. He later broke his right ankle in February 2023 and underwent surgery the following month. Since then, he has faced multiple ankle sprains and additional setbacks, appearing in just 105 of the Hornets’ 246 games over the past three seasons.
