Much has been said this Monday about Maxx Crosby’s departure from the Las Vegas Raiders. Reports indicate that this week will be decisive in determining whether he finds a new franchise where he can showcase his defensive talent.
In that context, seven teams are reportedly pursuing Crosby, and the franchise that has carried the need for a player of his caliber since the 2025 season is the Dallas Cowboys. That is precisely why Jerry Jones is moving urgently to try to secure the star defender.
It is no secret that Dallas’ defensive front line has been fragile. They were a true calamity in nearly all of their games. Once Micah Parsons departed the franchise, it was widely understood they would suffer the consequences, and that is exactly what happened.
Dallas’ plan B if Maxx Crosby does not arrive
Should negotiations between Dallas and Las Vegas fail to reach a favorable agreement, Jones already has a contingency plan in place to bolster the team with the Lone Star on its helmet.
The secondary objective for the team’s general manager and owner is Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Jaelan Phillips, according to Sports Illustrated reporter Albert Breer.
Jaelan Phillips would be another option at edge, who was with new coordinator Christian Parker last year in Philly.
Jaelan Phillips can help Dallas significantly
The linebacker entered the NFL in 2021 as a first-round selection by the Miami Dolphins and signed a rookie contract worth just over $14 million. During his tenure in Florida, he delivered solid performances.
In 2025, he was traded to Philadelphia, where he spent half the season. He is expected to enter unrestricted free agency, which begins on March 11 at 4:00 pm ET.
Phillips recorded 8.5 sacks in his rookie season with Miami. If Dallas ultimately turns to him to reinforce its defense, the move would not significantly compromise its salary cap situation.
The Cowboys are determined to rearm aggressively for the 2026 season, having gone two consecutive years without a postseason appearance. For a franchise with Dallas’ stature and following, that drought is simply unacceptable.
Through free agency and the draft, they must identify and secure the best available talent to return to prominence, now under head coach Brian Schottenheimer, who has led the team since 2025. Some of the key positions that require
reinforcement include:
- Linebacker
- Cornerback
- Edge rusher
- Running back
- Defensive tackle
- Offensive tackle
