With Super Bowl LIX fast approaching, New Orleans is reinforcing security across the city to ensure a safe and controlled environment for the influx of fans.
The heightened precautions come just weeks after a tragic New Year’s Day terror attack on Bourbon Street, where 14 people lost their lives.
Preparations for the massive event have been underway for 18 months, with NFL security leading efforts alongside local law enforcement.
According to Fox 8 New Orleans, major security upgrades are being implemented, including increased surveillance, fencing, and steel wedges at key entry points near Bourbon Street and the Superdome.

Hans Ganthier, Chief Deputy Superintendent of the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD), emphasized the city’s strategic deployment of officers.
“We will have multiple tactical teams, multiple undercover officers. We will spread them out in the Dome, the exterior of the Dome, the French Quarter, and the CBD,” Ganthier explained.
Additionally, officials are considering a proposal to convert Bourbon Street into a pedestrian-only zone during the event to help manage large crowds.
Warnings against street pole Climbing
As thousands of Philadelphia Eagles fans travel to New Orleans, officials are addressing a well-known celebration habit-climbing street poles.
NOPD spokesperson Barry Fletcher issued a strong warning against this behavior, calling it both illegal and dangerous.
“Many of the street light poles in the French Quarter are quite old. Climbing on them risks toppling the light pole,” Fletcher explained.
His statement comes in the wake of a tragic incident in Philadelphia, where an 18-year-old fan fell to his death after scaling a pole during the Eagles‘ NFC Championship celebrations.
To deter this risky activity, at least one French Quarter hotel has already greased a nearby pole on Bourbon Street. However, it remains unclear whether the city will implement similar measures on a larger scale.
With over 100,000 visitors expected for the Super Bowl, New Orleans is taking extensive steps to maintain public safety.
Tactical teams, undercover officers, and increased surveillance are all part of a comprehensive security plan designed to protect both residents and visitors.
As the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles prepare to battle for the championship, New Orleans is ensuring that the city remains safe, secure, and ready for the spotlight.
