After a disappointing postseason exit at the hands of the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Golden State Warriors are preparing for a critical offseason centered on extending their championship window.
With their core trio of Steph Curry, Draymond Green, and recently acquired Jimmy Butler in the latter stages of their careers, the front office appears determined to add both talent and depth.
Golden State was swept in four games by the surging Timberwolves, led by breakout star Anthony Edwards.
Crucially, the Warriors were without Steph Curry for the entire series after he sustained a hamstring injury in Game 1. Without their floor general, the team struggled to generate consistent offense and failed to slow Minnesota’s dynamic perimeter attack.
Golden State prioritizes playmaking wing and defensive anchor
The focus now shifts to the offseason, where ESPN’s Shams Charania reports the Warriors are planning to be “incredibly aggressive” in the market to find immediate help.
“The Warriors will be incredibly aggressive in the marketplace to go find help. To continue to retool around their big three of Steph Curry, Draymond Green and Jimmy Butler,” Charania said. “I’m told their priority is finding a playmaking wing, defender, or a center to add to this group.”
While the team has historically relied on high-IQ, motion-heavy offense and undersized lineups, the front office now appears ready to recalibrate.
Adding a playmaking wing could ease the burden on Curry and Butler, while a defensive-minded center could address the interior vulnerabilities that Minnesota exploited during the sweep.
The need for a reliable frontcourt presence is especially urgent with Kevon Looney entering unrestricted free agency.
While Looney has been a stalwart in Golden State’s system, anchoring the defense and grabbing critical rebounds during their championship runs, his role diminished this season, and his return is far from guaranteed.
Also hitting free agency is Gary Payton II, another unrestricted free agent known for his perimeter defense and energy off the bench. If he signs elsewhere, Golden State will need to find a guard or wing who can provide similar defensive grit.
In restricted free agency, the team faces decisions on forward Jonathan Kuminga and guard Pat Spencer. Kuminga in particular showed flashes of becoming a two-way contributor, and retaining him could be crucial if the Warriors want to maintain a balance between developing young talent and staying competitive in the short term.
