Gleyber Torres reached an agreement with the Detroit Tigers and thus leave behind his history as a New York Yankees player.
The 28-year-old Venezuelan will sign a one-year, $15 million contract, according to ESPN.
Torres, who joined the Yankees in 2016 in a trade with the Chicago Cubs, became a Major League player in 2018, and has a career OPS of .774, while defensively he has played second base and shortstop for the Manhattan Mules.
Torres is said to play second base for Detroit, a position he has been occupying for the last four years for the Yankees.
Torres has proven to be a power hitter in the middle of the Yankees’ lineup, despite suffering a drop in his slugging percentage in 2024 to finish with a .378 percentage after consecutive seasons above .450.
In the 2022 and 2023 seasons he hit a total of 49 home runs, but for the previous season he only reached 15 home runs.
In the American League Championship Series against the Cleveland Guardians, he stood out by hitting for a .364 average, and was an important part of the Yankees’ victory that earned them a ticket to the World Series.

Over the course of his seven MLB seasons, Torres has a .265 batting average, with 870 hits in 3,281 at-bats, plus 138 home runs and 441 RBIs. His lifetime slugging percentage is .441 and his OPS is .775.
The deal could mean a position change for Colt Keith, who was the Tigers’ starting second baseman in 2024.
Detroit maintains a flexible roster as its prospect base continues to earn places in the majors. They also signed pitcher Alex Cobb to a one-year, $15 million contract this offseason, as the team has only one major contract, shortstop Javier Baez, after the 2025 season.
