Russell Wilson’s time as QB1 for the New York Giants may already be running out – and the season hasn’t even started.
The former Super Bowl champ arrived in New York this offseason with high hopes and veteran swagger, signing a one-year deal to bring stability to a franchise that’s been desperate for a leader under center since Eli Manning retired. But despite Wilson’s experience, his spot at the top of the depth chart may be short-lived.
Enter Jaxson Dart, the Giants’ electric first-round draft pick out of Ole Miss. The 22-year-old rookie is already turning heads – not just with his 4,276 passing yards and 29 touchdowns from last season, but with how quickly he’s adapted to the NFL.
From seamless execution in high-pressure drills to earning praise from head coach Brian Daboll, Dart has quietly become the future of the franchise – and that future may be arriving sooner than expected.
Wilson has the job…for now
According to insiders at MetLife Stadium, there’s a “different energy” around the team – one that suggests a changing of the guard may be on the horizon. While Wilson currently takes first-team reps and provides valuable leadership, multiple reports, including from Pro Football Focus, project Dart could take over mid-season if momentum shifts.
“Eventually, Wilson will pave the way for Dart,” PFF writes, “but he likely enters the 2025 season as the Giants’ starter.”
But even that “likely” is starting to feel shaky.
Wilson’s performance with the Steelers in 2024 was his best since 2020, earning a solid 79.5 PFF grade. Yet, despite his mentorship and command of the offense, the buzz around Dart won’t die down. And if the Giants struggle early, the calls to hand the reins to the rookie may become too loud to ignore.
The HC keeps its options open
Daboll is keeping things open-ended. “I think it’s important to really talk and communicate and listen to any of the quarterbacks,” he said at OTAs. “But Russ has been good for us… in a number of ways.”
Translation? Wilson’s helping – but he may be warming the seat for Dart.
After years of failed experiments and quarterback carousel chaos, the Giants are hungry for their next true franchise player. Russ may be the bridge, but Dart is clearly the destination. And the countdown may have already begun.
