Brian Daboll’s departure plunged the New York Giants into uncertainty. After a forgettable season, the team seems to have its sights set on Notre Dame’s young star, Marcus Freeman, to take the reins starting next season. Much to Golden Tate’s displeasure.
Freeman is coming off another stellar season with the Fighting Irish, achieving a 10-2 record to raise his overall record to 43-12 since joining the program in 2021.
Thanks to this success, the university rewarded him with a four-year contract extension, with a salary of $9 million per year, according to some press reports.
Although these circumstances make a jump to the NFL unlikely, the rumors haven’t stopped. Amid this situation, Tate spoke out to warn Freeman to stay with the Fighting Irish.
Freeman is better off at Notre Dame, for the time being
In a recent interview with Kay Adams on the Up & Adams Show, the former Giants wide receiver was emphatic, saying, “If I’m Marcus Freeman, I say hell to the no, and stay right here.”
He asserted that the 39-year-old head coach has something good going on with Notre Dame and shouldn’t leave it. Furthermore, Tate reminded everyone that Freeman has no NFL experience.
“I don’t think he’s ever been an intern or done anything in the NFL. That’s a huge jump, buddy,”Tate cautioned.
He admitted that the time will come for Freeman to coach in the NFL, but it’s not now.
“The time is not now to be inserting yourself into the NFL with what you have in Notre Dame, for one.” Moreover, Tate recalled, “We’ve had a bunch of guys who hadn’t been able to figure it out in New York.”
To conclude, the former wide receiver pointed out, “You think the guy who has no experience at all in the NFL, from my understanding, I think both parties are better off now.”
Who are the candidates to lead the Giants?
The Giants have not yet officially endorsed any candidate. However, the media has mentioned other names besides Marcus Freeman.
Among the most prominent are Jeff Hafley, the Packers’ defensive end; Lou Anarumo, the Colts’ defensive end; Kliff Kingsbury, the Commanders’ offensive coordinator; and Klint Kubiak, the Seahawks’ offensive coordinator.
With only two more weeks of play remaining, the head coaching search will soon begin. At that point, we’ll know if the Giants give Freeman a chance or if they prefer someone with NFL experience.
