Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo is recovering from a bout of COVID-19 illness and has no problem discussing its aftereffects.

With training camp on the horizon, he is showing us behind the scenes how the illness has altered his body, and how the team is moving forward with positivism after his issue.

Illness in Greece delays his return

While in Greece visiting his homeland once again, Giannis contracted COVID-19 and therefore missed the beginning of Bucks camp. He stayed back in the greek country for some time as he waited until tests were negative before his return to the team.

He also was out the team on media day, something the Bucks arranged for him to participate in remotely.

“It Took a toll on my body”

Upon finally returning to camp, Giannis gave a realistic rundown of his status:

“I think it took a toll on my body. I’m not feeling 100 % yet physically. … I was able to do some 5-on-0, run up and down a little bit. Tomorrow I’ll be a little better.”

With fewer than three weeks to go until the start of the season, he reiterated his desire to control his return: “Taking it day by day … I’ve got like 18 days until the first game, so I think I’ll be fine.”

While not yet completely healed, Giannis is cautiously optimistic about being at full strength at the start of the season.

Back to the Bucks

Giannis is expected to return with the team in Miami from Greece, aligning with the Bucks’ preseason games schedule.

He skipped some initial camp practice, but the Bucks and coaching staff expect him to catch up in a couple of days. Although it is unclear if he will be playing right away in preseason matches, just the fact that he is arriving marks a restoration to normalcy for a squad counting on his health.

Giannis’ ability to show humility on his comeback highlights a key fact: regardless of how great, athletes are fragile. His humility and process-driven mindset may keep his long-term success going longer than any highlight reel.
