The boxing world is once again in mourning, as it was announced on Thursday that female boxer Georgia O’Connor passed away at just 25 years old. This comes only two days after legendary Italian boxer Nino Benvenuti died at 87.

O’Connor’s death at such a young age comes after a battle with what was considered an incurable cancer that was “rare and aggressive”. O’Connor had married Adriano Cardinali on May 9, in a final act of love before her untimely passing.

Georgia O’Connor had a bright future in boxing before health issues

Born in Durham, England, O’Connor was a decorated amateur and turned pro in 2021 at 21 years of age. Over the span of a year, she picked up three wins in three bouts and quickly made a name for herself as a light middleweight.

Her career was put in jeopardy when she was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in early 2023. By 2025, she had developed an aggressive cancer that had spread too quickly. Despite a strong battle, O’Connor succumbed to the cancer on Thursday. O’Connor strongly called out the National Health Service in the United Kingdom when she announced her cancer diagnosis in January.

Tributes from the boxing world poured in, and she will always be remembered as a fighter, both inside and outside of the ring.
