A growing conversation has emerged lately around whether fans are experiencing “Chiefs fatigue.” Some believe the Kansas City Chiefs are becoming the NFL’s next great dynasty, while others suggest the team is facing increasing backlash.

However, FS1 commentator Chris Broussard has pointed out an interesting contradiction-despite multiple controversies surrounding figures connected to the team, Kansas City has largely avoided significant animosity from the public.

During a recent episode of First Things First, Broussard addressed a key factor that could have fueled public resentment toward the Chiefs-political controversy. Yet, despite these moments, he argues that Patrick Mahomes‘ brilliance has kept the team widely respected.

“When Mahomes‘ family, his wife, supported Trump, that was a reason half the country could have really jumped on Mahomes and Kansas City … and gone at them,” Broussard explained. “I didn’t see that happen for the most part. That was a reason that a lot of people could have been like, ‘See, that’s why I hate the Chiefs.’ And you didn’t get that. I think you didn’t get it because Mahomes is so great that people let him go.”

Public perception

The controversy Broussard referred to stems from Brittany Mahomes, the wife of Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who publicly engaged with former President Donald Trump‘s social media content.

Back in September 2024, Brittany liked an Instagram post from Trump, which was quickly noticed by internet users. The former president responded by publicly thanking her in a follow-up post, drawing attention to the interaction.

This situation, according to Broussard, had all the ingredients to spark controversy, as politics is one of the most divisive subjects in America today. However, surprisingly, it didn’t generate widespread backlash against the Chiefs as a team.

Adding to the political discourse, Trump later referenced Mahomes when mocking Taylor Swift, who publicly endorsed his opponent, Kamala Harris. While this clash could have added more fuel to anti-Chiefs sentiment, it ultimately did not shift public perception in any significant way.

Even Brittany Mahomes seemed to acknowledge the controversy when she later posted a message on Instagram calling for “kindness and positivity.” Many interpreted this as her attempt to distance herself from any political drama.

Despite moments of controversy, the Chiefs remain one of the most watched, celebrated and respected teams in the NFL. Mahomes‘ continued excellence on the field plays a huge role in this.

Travis Kelce‘s high-profile relationship with Taylor Swift could have also made the team a lightning rod for criticism. Yet, Swift‘s appearances at games and her influence on the sport’s viewership have largely enhanced the Chiefs‘ image rather than tarnished it.
