Gervonta Davis is once again the fighter on many boxing fans’ minds at the moment, but it’s for a reason that he wouldn’t have expected. Heading into a fight against Lamont Roach Jr. with a 30-0 record and 28 knockouts, “Tank” was expected to wipe the floor with Roach. That outcome wouldn’t have surprised anyone, and it would have fueled the haters who believe Davis has been cruising and ducking as of late.
Instead, Roach gave Davis the toughest scrap of his career. So much so that Davis went down to a knee at one point in the fight. Controversially not called a knockdown, that decision by the referee very well might have been the difference between a draw and a win for Roach. Roach’s strong performance has many thinking Davis’ best days are behind him. Not everyone feels that way, though.
Timothy Bradley thinks Tank Davis had an off night against “puncher” Lamont Roach Jr.
One who isn’t out on Davis just yet is Timothy Bradley. The elite boxer turned broadcaster has come out to defend Davis from some of the criticism, claiming that “styles make fights” in an interview with BoxingScene.
Tank is not overrated, or anything like that. I know a lot of people are saying that…. I think that Tank feels that he let a lot of people down. I think that Tank feels that he let himself down. I feel that he feels that he could have done better in the fight. He kind of mismanaged the fight, in a sense.
Despite saying the fight “was a shocker to everyone“, Bradley gives credit to Roach more than blaming Davis. Roach “became the puncher”, which isn’t something Davis has been accustomed to from past opponents.
Tank may have been caught off guard by Roach’s aggressiveness, but Bradley thinks he just didn’t have it that night against a surprisingly great fighter.
