Pete Alonso and the New York Mets have a solid history together, but the player’s stay with the Queens team is looking increasingly distant.

Alonso was eager to stay defending the Mets’ colors, but at a cost that he had not been able to reach until now. The New Yorkers captured the biggest fish on the free agent market (Juan Soto) and Alonso’s future in the clubhouse is questionable.

Mets owner Steve Cohen was not happy with the way Alonso’s free agency was going, and after his statement, it is clear that the Queens team is looking for other options.

The Mets are ready to be one of the top playoff contenders with or without Alonso. After acquiring Juan Soto, they have not done everything necessary to keep Alonso with the New York team.

Pete Alonso and the possibility of an uncomfortable clubhouse with the Mets

Former Mets pitcher Jerry Blevins said it would be awkward if the team re-signs Alonso, and believes that Alonso’s ego and Soto’s arrival will make things difficult in the team’s locker room.

“Pete has been basically the face of the Mets for his entire career. He was like the superstar. But now you have Lindor, you have Nimmo as your veteran voice and you bring in a superstar like Soto,” said Blevins, who noted that spring training would be weird for Alonso, even if the Mets bring him back.

“There is a possibility that it will be a little awkward if the Mets rehire him, it will be with open arms, but the first few days in spring training could be a little strange,” Blevins explained in comments published by totalprosports.com.

Alonso’s agent, Scott Boras, has played a crucial role in Alonso’s free agency. Boras is known for closing big deals, but Alonso’s free agency is not changing and spring training camps are getting closer and closer.

At the end of the 2024 MLB season, the Mets were predicted to sign Alonso immediately after the 2024 season, but after acquiring Soto things have taken a drastic turn.

Alonso will sign with a team one way or another, but it may not be the Mets. The first baseman is one of the best free agents available on the market.

Several teams, including the Toronto Blue Jays, have been linked to Pete Alonso, despite the fact that many believe Alonso is desperately hoping to return to the Mets, an increasingly distant possibility.
