This past Friday, March 27, 2026, an incident unfolded that reignited concerns surrounding the greatest golfer of all time, Tiger Woods. Once again, he became involved in a major situation away from the golf course.
Woods was part of an accident in which his car ended up overturned, all while he was under the influence of prohibited substances, leading to a DUI arrest. Regarding the matter, veteran golfer Mark Lye hopes the consequences will not be limited to legal repercussions, but extend onto the course as well.
The harsh punishment Mark Lye is calling for Tiger Woods
There is a saying that greatness and character endure until the very end, and it applies well to Tiger Woods. He remains the ultimate reference point in golf, yet his behavior off the course has often left much to be desired.
First domino should be to take Tiger’s name off LA Open Genisis…not a good look. Next, the Hero. As a former player myself, as well as broadcaster, I couldn’t even show my face again. His kids will suffer as well, shameful and selfish.
Mark Lye wrote in an X post and added.
I don’t like sugar-coating things, and the way I look at it, there’s got to be some sort of punishment or withdrawal or some sort of suspension from the game.
The accident involving Woods included his vehicle, a Land Rover, which collided with a truck and ultimately flipped over. The incident occurred near Woods’ residence. Fortunately, there were no injuries, but it once again sparked criticism regarding dangerous driving.
Although Tiger’s breathalyzer test registered 0%, he refused to take a urine test, which ultimately resulted in his DUI arrest.
He spent eight hours in custody, as required by law for this type of incident. He was released around 11:15 p.m., and a car picked him up to take him home.
Lye is now calling for Woods to be removed as host of the Genesis International and the World Hero Challenge, as well as from his role as chair of the Future Competition Committee.
The severity of the punishment Lye is requesting stems from the belief that Woods’ actions could negatively influence others, especially given what transpired last Friday. It is also worth recalling that in May 2017, Woods was found asleep in his car and was similarly arrested on suspicion of DUI.
At that time, toxicology reports revealed the presence of five prescription medications in his system. Woods pleaded guilty to reckless driving, paid a $250 fine, and was required to participate in a 12-month program.
The PGA enforces strict penalties for members who violate alcohol or conduct policies, but these typically apply only during active participation in a tournament. Since this was not the case, the PGA has limited authority to act.
On the other hand, while Lye is demanding severe punishment, others have expressed their support for Woods.
One of them was Anthony Kim, who has also dealt with similar incidents in the past and, after overcoming them, found the strength to return even stronger.
Dunno wat @tigerwoods is dealin w & it isn’t my business. As some1 who has & will always deal w my own issues like every other human I pray the man who positively influenced my life and millions of others overcomes wat he is going thru. Trust GOD 1% BETTER SOBER is DOPE.
Kim wrote about the Tiger Woods incident in an X post.
I feel so badly. He’s got some difficulties.”…”There was an accident, that’s all I know. He’s a very close friend of mine. He’s an amazing person, amazing man, but some difficulties.
