The boxing world is waiting to find out who Canelo Alvarez‘s next opponent will be for his May fight, as he reported that it would be in that month when he would schedule his fight.

On the list of possible opponents for the Jalisco boxer, names have emerged that have been mentioned for several months, such as Terence Crawford and David Benavidez, which is more the dream of the industry than a purpose of Saul Alvarez, and in recent days William Scull was mentioned who said he was in negotiations for the fight.

Canelo Alvarez remains silent

In this regard, Canelo (62-2-2) has not commented on the negotiations for the potential fight with the Cuban, who would arrive as the IBF champion, the same organization that took the super middleweight belt from the Mexican last September for not accepting to fight with Scull, who at that time was the mandatory challenger of the International Boxing Federation.

Beyond these possible options for his fight in May, Saul Alvarez does not have many names on his list to agree his first fight of 2025, at least in the Super Middleweight category.

While there are emerging names such as France’s Christian Mbilli or Diego Pacheco, the possible contenders lack the profile for a meaningful fight for dominance in the 168-pound division.

In this situation, Terence Crawford’s name seems to be of greater media magnitude than the others mentioned, however, he is below the super middleweight category, as he fights in the super welterweight division.

Terence Crawford, the best economic option for Saul Alvarez

If Alvarez wants to do business, the direct line is Terence Crawford (41-0), although he fights at 154 pounds and that could detract from the fight against the 37-year-old fighter, but with the support of Sheikh Turki Alalshikh the economic argument is reinforced.

In terms of Pay-Per-View (PPV), since 2021, Canelo has averaged more than 581,000 PPV sales, a figure that Crawford has only surpassed once: against Errol Spence Jr. in July 2023.

The Guadalajara boxer has a decision that looks complicated due to the lack of big names at 168 pounds.
