The boxing world was shocked when Jaime Munguia’s victory over Bruno Surace on May 4 was called into question after he tested positive for a banned substance in a doping test, which compromised the legitimacy of the fight.
Munguia was notified by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) of possible doping after external testosterone metabolites were detected in Sample A, and he has 10 days to request an analysis of Sample B. If the result is confirmed, he could lose his victory over Surace and face a suspension of up to one year.
“It’s shocking. I have no comment on that. My question is, who is the trainer? If four of your fighters test positive for any reason, who is the trainer? The trainer is in charge of that and must look into everything, including the nutritionist and doctor. The trainer is responsible, but we will have to ask him,” said Oscar de la Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions regarding Jaime‘s positive test result.
However, he is not the only one to speak out. Floyd Mayweather’s uncle has also attacked the Canelo Team.
“The only way to stop him is for the commissions to do their job,” said Jeff Mayweather. “But boxing is a business, and whoever makes money can do whatever they want.”
“Yes, I think the punishment should be, well, at least a year without income,” he said. “I think that’s what the commission should do.”
Canelo defends Eddy Reynoso and supports Munguia
At a press conference for the charity golf event No Golf, No Life, the Mexican boxer gave his full support to his team and sent a message of support to Munguia.
“Obviously, we are 100 percent behind Munguía. Only he knows what happened. People are obviously attacking Eddy. Eddy just trains him. Period. I told Eddy a while ago, ‘When you take on a fighter, you have to give him everything: food, supplements, whatever it takes so that these things don’t happen to you,’ and they have happened. They blame it all on the Canelo Team,” Alvarez commented.
“What I do know is that we believe in Munguía, and he will clear things up soon. Eddy Reynoso is only dedicated to training.”
We will have to wait for Jaime Munguia‘s “test B.” The truth is that the entire boxing world and social media are outraged at the Canelo team.
