Since Sophie Cunningham suffered a torn MCL in her right knee and subsequent surgery in August, she has made sure to stay in touch with Indiana Fever fans.

On the court, on social media, and on her podcast “Show Me Something,” the 29-year-old point guard shares her thoughts, updates on her recovery, and team information. This time, it was her words about Kelsey Mitchell’s health that caught everyone’s attention.

Sophie provides updates on her teammate’s injury

Mitchell was one of the few Fever players who remained standing throughout the season after losing Caitlin Clark and the other five injuries that came during the rest of the year, including Sophie’s.

Leading the team, Kelsey averaged 20.2 points, 3.4 assists, and 1.8 rebounds, earning her a spot as one of the five MVP finalists. However, in Game 5 of the Playoff Semifinals, the 29-year-old guard suffered an injury during the third quarter and was forced to leave the court and be taken to the hospital.

She later revealed that she suffered from “rhabdomyolysis,” in which her “muscles stopped producing and reached their maximum capacity.”

On the podcast she hosts with West Wilson, Cunningham talked about how scary it was and how serious her injury could have been: “She just got a full-body cramp, but it’s like imagine having a charley horse, but times 100,” Sophie explained.

She was a little sick, super dehydrated, but really the doctor just said, you know, like she played until her wheels came off. Her body was just at a point of exhaustion where she couldn’t go anymore. And like I believe it, man. She carried the team on her back all season long and you know, it just came down to that,” Cunningham said.

Later, Sophie said that Kelsey is recovering, but that “she’s super sore” and “walking slowly.” Meanwhile, Mitchell is expected to be part of the second season of Unrivaled Basketball in January, the league co-founded in 2023 by Napheesa Collier and Breanna Stewart, stars of the Minnesota Lynx and New York Liberty, respectively.
