The Cleveland Browns have been a real spectacle at the quarterback position this semester. Of course, they have the most media-hyped player in the NFL right now-Shedeur Sanders-who had a spectacular performance in the first preseason game against the Carolina Panthers, throwing two touchdown passes.

However, on the Browns’ roster there are six quarterbacks-yes, six. The only one returning from last season is Deshaun Watson, but he suffered a couple of injuries and may not return until October. The rest are new: the first signing in free agency was Kenny Pickett, then came Joe Flacco, and in the Draft they selected Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders.

Last week, due to muscle injuries to Dillon Gabriel and Kenny Pickett, the team signed the experienced Tyler Huntley. It’s honestly a soap opera of a situation, though the one with the clear lead to be the starter is Joe Flacco.

Kenny Pickett could be the main trade candidate

Deshaun Watson and Tyler Huntley are essentially out of the picture. With Joe Flacco cementing himself as the starter, the time and preference given to Dillon Gabriel, plus the excitement of seeing Shedeur Sanders start, make Kenny Pickett the weakest of all the quarterbacks.

To make matters worse, just over a week ago Pickett suffered a hamstring injury, and he still hasn’t recovered. This is valuable time he’s losing, and Browns analyst Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated believes the Pittsburgh Steelers’ 2022 first-round pick is the top candidate to be traded.

“I think that’d be possible. I think that kind of depends on: A. Are we going to get a look at him at all in preseason, right, which would allow other teams to get a look at him. And then, B. Is there a team out there that has some sort of material change to their quarterback situation… I certainly could see a scenario where someone is intrigued enough to take a look at him,” said Breer.

There’s still a way to go, but Kenny Pickett’s injury is causing him to lose valuable time, and in the end, it might not be enough for him to stay with the Cleveland Browns-forcing him to look for an opportunity elsewhere.
