In a couple of weeks’ time, the fight between Edgar Berlanga and Hamzah Sheeraz will take place at the Louis Armstrong Stadium in Queens. However, more than talking about the fight, the central debate has been about Berlanga’s current position in the boxing world, as recent statements by the boxer generated a lot of criticism on social media for believing himself to be more than he is, according to fans.

Edgar Berlanga is coming off a very good knockout victory against Jonathan Gonzalez-Ortiz and is preparing in the best possible way for his next fight. However, the boxer’s overconfidence has him at the center of ridicule on social media, as he was recently seen talking in a video uploaded on Instagram and it did not leave him in a very good light.

The video was published by The Ring on social networks and in it, a presentation of the upcoming fight was made. In the video, Berlanga presented himself in a rather peculiar way, which generated outrage.

“What’s up, guys? I’m the King of New York, Edgar Berlanga. I’m here in Boulder, Colorado. Almost four weeks away from fight night.”

The new King of New York?

For decades, New York has been a hotbed of historic boxing talent, giving the world iconic figures such as Mike Tyson, Floyd Patterson and, more recently, Teofimo Lopez. All of them have left an indelible mark on the sport. However, Edgar Berlanga has chosen to ignore that legacy by dubbing himself the “King of New York”, despite not yet having achieved a major world title.

This self-proclamation caused Berlanga to lose support and at the same time gain critics who did not like his arrogance. In addition, from Puerto Rico, the country from which he is descended, they were also quite annoyed at not mentioning the place where he comes from, something he did on other occasions.

Edgar Berlanga’s career

Edgar Berlanga was born on May 18, 1997, in Brooklyn, New York, and is one of the most talked about names in boxing today. Of Puerto Rican descent, he has managed to gain the attention of the public with his explosive style and strong media presence, although not without controversy. His career began in 2016 and from there it went from strength to strength

One of Berlanga’s main achievements was to achieve 16 consecutive first-round knockout victories. In addition, a fight that marked part of his career was the one in 2024 against Canelo Alvarez.

In September 2024, Berlanga had his biggest opportunity to date: a fight against unified champion Canelo Alvarez. The fight, held in Las Vegas, was a showcase for Berlanga, who promised to represent Puerto Rico with pride. However, the result was resounding. Canelo dominated the 12 rounds and Berlanga suffered the first defeat of his career, unable to achieve his first major achievement, something that still weighs on him to this day.
