With NFL free agency just around the corner, teams across the league are preparing to make major moves to bolster their rosters. For the Philadelphia Eagles, this means facing the possibility of losing one of their premier defensive playmakers, Josh Sweat.
While the team recently secured linebacker Zack Baun on a three-year, $51 million contract, Sweat remains unsigned and is set to test the open market. The pass rusher’s impressive showing in Super Bowl LIX significantly boosted his value, making him one of the top defensive free agents available this offseason.
Sweat was a driving force behind Philadelphia’s dominant defensive performance in the Super Bowl, helping to slow down Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.
The 26-year-old defensive end finished the game with six tackles and 2.5 sacks, proving that he can step up on the biggest stage. With multiple teams looking to improve their pass rush, Sweat is expected to attract plenty of interest once free agency begins.
Could Sweat join the Packers?
Several franchises will likely pursue Sweat, but one potential suitor has already emerged-the Green Bay Packers. NFL insider Mike Jones of The Athletic recently suggested that the Packers could make a serious push to sign the dynamic pass rusher.
“Sweat made himself some money with his impactful performance for the Eagles in Super Bowl LIX. He’s expected to hit the open market, where he’ll draw a good bit of interest. The Packers have needed a difference-making pass rusher, and Sweat seemingly could step in and fill that void,” Jones noted.
Green Bay has been searching for an elite edge rusher to complement Rashan Gary, and Sweat could be the perfect fit. His ability to pressure the quarterback and disrupt plays in the backfield would add another dimension to the Packers‘ defense.
