Dwight Howard took to Instagram on Wednesday to share the heartbreaking news that his beloved dog, Sunday, was killed in what he described as a hit-and-run incident.

The tragedy occurred on June 18 in Suwanee, Georgia, where Howard currently resides.

Sunday, a loyal Belgian Malinois who was more than just a pet to the 38-year-old athlete, was allegedly struck by a vehicle that fled the scene.

Now, as Howard continues his basketball career in the BIG3 league, he finds himself seeking justice and mourning the loss of one of his closest companions.

“I need answers,” Howard pleaded on Instagram. “And I won’t stop searching until I find out what happened to my beautiful Sunday.”

Howard, who played 18 seasons in the NBA and won a championship with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020, has often shared glimpses of his life outside basketball with his fans.

But this loss has clearly shaken him deeply. Accompanying his emotional post were photos and videos of Sunday over the years.

Sunday was more than a pet

In a poignant tribute, Howard reflected on Sunday’s unique role in his life.

“You were my peace. My protector. A reminder of everything beautiful and calm, just like those early Sunday mornings,” Howard wrote.

“You were joy. You were warmth. You were my girl. And your life was cut short too soon.”

The depth of Howard‘s grief shows how much Sunday meant to him, not simply as a guard dog or companion, but as a stabilizing presence during the ups and downs of life.

While the eight-time NBA All-Star has endured plenty on the court, he often found solace in his pets. Sunday, in particular, was frequently featured in his personal posts and behind-the-scenes content.

Following the tragic incident, Howard made it clear that he is determined to uncover what happened. He is appealing to the public for any information that could help identify the driver responsible for Sunday’s death.

Howard’s fans responded with compassion, flooding his comments section with words of comfort and encouragement.

One follower wrote: “My condolences, brother. Sunday was a beautiful dog. May you find the answers and have peace.”

Others shared their own stories of losing pets, offering solidarity and emotional support.
