As the 2025 NFL Draft draws closer, Miami quarterback Cam Ward has emerged as the top signal-caller in his class. After an exceptional season, Ward appears poised to be the first overall pick, solidifying his place as the next potential franchise quarterback at the professional level.
Ward‘s journey to this moment has been nothing short of remarkable. The 6-foot-2, 219-pound passer was once an unranked recruit, beginning his collegiate career at Incarnate Word before transferring to Washington State and later Miami.
His steady rise through the ranks culminated in an outstanding 2024 season, where he was named ACC Player of the Year and finished as a Heisman Trophy finalist.
The numbers speak for themselves-39 passing touchdowns (most in the nation), 4,313 passing yards (second-most), and only seven interceptions. Ward also finished his college career with 178 career touchdown passes, making him the all-time leader in that category.
Despite his impressive production, however, NFL scouts have raised concerns about his aggressive style of play, questioning whether his risk-taking tendencies could lead to costly mistakes at the next level.
Scouts wary of Ward’s reckless tendencies
Ward‘s ability to extend plays and push the ball downfield has made him one of the most exciting quarterback prospects in years. However, some NFL evaluators worry that his aggressive nature sometimes backfires.
One AFC scout, quoted by ESPN’s Jordan Reid, pointed out Ward‘s occasional lapses in decision-making, suggesting that his instinct for high-risk plays may not be easily corrected.
“He has times where he has to scratch his itch for reckless plays, and it leaves you asking, ‘What the heck was he thinking there?'” the scout said.
“I like him and don’t know if that can be coached out of him.
“Ward is a work in progress when it comes to controlling careless plays and head-scratching decisions outside of structure that lead to turnovers, with his pick-six against Cal being a prime example. He also had spurts of inaccuracy against Georgia Tech, helping contribute to Miami’s first loss of the season.”
