Nick Kyrgios was the first to speak out about it this week and Novak Djokovic, his doubles partner in Brisbane, has followed suit. The maverick Canberra player was demanding a bigger share of the tournament’s profits for the players and Djokovic agreed with him
“The ones in the NFL, NBA, Major League Baseball and the NHL take home about half of what they generate. That’s not the case in tennis. It’s obvious that there are differences because our sport is global, with different rules, many countries involved, different tax rates… The tournaments handle the money and then there are ATP, WTA, the Grand Slams, which are independent entities and can do whatever they want,” he said
Djokovic acknowledges that with so many bodies involved in tennis “it’s difficult to get everyone in the same room and agree on the percentage of money that should go to the professionals.”
