As the 2025 NFL Draft draws near, Shilo Sanders finds himself in a difficult position. Unlike his younger brother, Shedeur Sanders, who is widely projected as a top-10 pick, Shilo’s path to the league is far from guaranteed.

His performance at the East-West Shrine Bowl failed to elevate his draft stock, and his exclusion from the NFL Scouting Combine only added to his challenges. Despite the setbacks, he has found unwavering support from his older half-brother, Deion Sanders Jr., who has stepped in to keep his spirits high.

On social media, Deion Jr. shared a heartfelt message, posting a video with the caption: “Turn up young king.” His words served as a reminder that, no matter the obstacles, Shilo has his family in his corner.

Shilo’s path to the NFL has been anything but smooth. His football journey began at Trinity School, where he made waves with standout performances despite being undersized at 5’9″ as a teenager.

Over time, he grew into a 6-foot defensive back, making a name for himself with key plays, including a game-sealing touchdown against Texas Tech and an on-field tribute to his father, Deion Sanders, by recreating his signature dance.

However, his momentum took a hit following a forearm injury during the 2024 season against Nebraska. The injury sidelined him for nearly three games, and upon his return, he struggled in coverage, particularly in Colorado’s 31-28 loss to Kansas State, where DJ Giddens repeatedly exploited gaps in Shilo‘s tackling.

Hoping to prove his worth to NFL scouts, Shilo participated in the East-West Shrine Bowl, recording five tackles and a pass deflection. Yet, his showing wasn’t enough to change the narrative, as viral clips of him struggling in one-on-one drills overshadowed his stronger moments.

With the Combine snub further complicating his draft prospects, Shilo took matters into his own hands-he hired a private analytics team and organized a showcase in Colorado, using Zybek Sports, the same company responsible for timing the official 40-yard dash at the Combine.

By filming the session and posting it on YouTube, he made it clear he wasn’t waiting for opportunities-he was creating them. But just as he fights to keep his football dreams alive, a longstanding legal battle threatens his future.

Financial struggles and legal battles threaten Shilo’s career

Shilo Sanders‘ challenges extend beyond the football field, as he remains entangled in an $11 million bankruptcy case dating back to a 2015 incident during his high school years.

Former security guard John Darjean accused Shilo of causing serious injuries while trying to confiscate his phone. Although Shilo‘s parents were eventually removed from the case, he remained the sole defendant.

By the time the lawsuit went to trial in 2022, Shilo had dismissed his attorneys and failed to appear in court, leading to a default judgment of $11.89 million against him.

He later argued that his actions were in self-defense, but his absence during the proceedings resulted in an automatic ruling against him. In October 2023, he filed for bankruptcy in an attempt to clear the debt.

Now, Darjean‘s legal team is pushing back, accusing Shilo of concealing assets while displaying an extravagant lifestyle on social media. They even referenced an Instagram post from Wynn Casino as “evidence” of his financial situation.

In response, Shilo‘s legal team sought a protective order to keep details of the case private, but Darjean’s attorneys dismissed it as an attempt to create “an unworkable tangled ball of chaos.”

The outcome of the bankruptcy case will have significant implications. If the court rules in Shilo‘s favor, he could move forward with a clean financial slate. However, if the ruling goes against him, Darjean could legally claim a portion of any future NFL earnings, keeping Shilo entangled in financial uncertainty for years to come.

For now, Shilo remains focused on securing a place in the NFL, but the road ahead is filled with obstacles. While Shedeur is widely expected to be one of the first players off the draft board, Shilo is battling for a roster spot. His fight isn’t just for a professional football career-it’s for financial stability and a fresh start.
