The year 2025 will soon have one of the most striking fights when David Benavidez and David Morrell meet at 175 pounds on February 1.
Two undefeated fighters will face off for the great opportunity to challenge the absolute Light Heavyweight champion, who will emerge from the rematch between Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol on February 22.
Benavidez asks Morrell to undergo doping tests
With several verbal clashes at different public events between the two, the statements have become more heated with just over a month to go before the fight in Las Vegas.
Now Benavidez (29-0) accuses Morrell (11-0) of refusing to do pre-fight drug tests and hopes that is not the case this time.
“If there’s VADA (Voluntary Anti-Doping Association) testing, then let’s do it and make it a clean fight. The ones he fought said they did VADA, and they didn’t force David Morrell to do VADA. They were two different fighters.
“He tried to do the same thing to me because we’re 13 weeks in. When I fought Caleb Plant, we had started testing 14 weeks before. With Boo Boo Andrade 14 weeks before. How is it that this guy comes to the biggest fight of his life and doesn’t have to do any VADA testing and is already being accused of steroid use?” said the Mexican Monster to MillCity Boxing.
David Benavidez considers the issue with David Morrell ‘weird’
However, David Benavidez did not directly accuse the Cuban David Morrell, although he did point out his strange attitude towards doping tests.
“I’m not saying he’s on steroids or anything like that, but when you’re not trying to do the VADA test, it looks a bit weird. Plus, he says he’s a gym rat because he’s getting tested. This is clean boxing, we’re getting VADA tested every week or every two weeks.
“If you don’t like it, you’re probably doing something or maybe you’re a little worried that something might go wrong in these VADA tests. I’ve been tested more than anyone in VADA and that’s a fact. I’ve been tested more than 30 times and I’ve never complained, I never said I was a lab rat,” said Benavidez.
