David Benavidez, widely known as the “Mexican Monster,” has become one of boxing’s most dominant forces.

His remarkable journey from a challenging upbringing to becoming an undefeated champion showcases his resilience, dedication, and unbreakable spirit. Yet, the path to greatness was not without its personal battles, and Benavidez had to overcome significant hurdles that nearly derailed his career.

Born on December 17, 1996, in Phoenix, Arizona, Benavidez was raised in a boxing family. His father, Jose Benavidez Sr., was his first trainer, and David, along with his brother Jose Jr., was introduced to the sport at an early age.

Given his natural talent and boxing IQ, it seemed inevitable that Benavidez would make his mark in the sport. At just 20 years old, he became the youngest super middleweight champion in boxing history, further solidifying his place in the sport’s future.

However, Benavidez’s journey was not always a smooth one. At the age of 15, after his parents’ separation, he faced a significant turning point in his life. His father and older brother moved away for training, leaving David behind.

This lack of guidance and discipline, combined with personal struggles, led Benavidez down a dangerous path. During this period, he indulged in unhealthy habits, particularly overeating, which resulted in his weight skyrocketing to nearly 260 lbs. For a 6’1″ teenager, the weight gain was both a physical and mental burden. Benavidez struggled with self-esteem, unable to recognize the person he saw in the mirror.

The turning point

Benavidez’s low point came when he realized the consequences of his unhealthy lifestyle. His brother’s teasing and his father’s disappointment struck a chord, prompting him to take responsibility for his future.

He recalled the devastating realization that if he continued down this path, his boxing career would be over before it even began. He saw himself on a path to obesity and failure, something that motivated him to make a drastic change.

Rather than succumbing to self-pity, Benavidez embraced the challenge ahead. The pressure from his father’s disappointment and his own reflection in the mirror became the wake-up call he needed. He returned to boxing with a renewed focus, dedicating himself to shedding the weight and regaining the discipline he had lost. This turning point not only transformed his body but also set the foundation for his future success in the ring.

Despite his transformation, Benavidez still faces challenges with his weight. As a fighter in both the super middleweight and light heavyweight divisions, his natural weight hovers around 200 lbs, creating difficulties in making weight for his fights.

Losing weight before each match has become a recurring theme in his career, and Benavidez has faced setbacks due to this challenge.
