The Dallas Cowboys are one of the most iconic franchises in the NFL, yet their championship drought continues. After winning three Super Bowls in the 1990s, they haven’t even reached the NFC Championship Game since their last title in January 1996. Now, with Brian Schottenheimer at the helm, the Cowboys find themselves in a highly competitive NFC East. The Eagles are fresh off another Super Bowl win, the Commanders have rebuilt their roster and the Giants could be back in the mix if they draft Shedeur Sanders. Originally, Dallas were expected to select Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty with the 12th overall pick, but after signing Miles Sanders and Javonte Williams in free agency, that plan seems unlikely. Personally, I think the Cowboys should target a wide receiver, as Dak Prescott has no reliable options beyond CeeDee Lamb.
Is Jerry Jones Eyeing a Quarterback in the Draft?
The Cowboys’ backup quarterback situation has been a revolving door in recent years. From Andy Dalton to Cooper Rush, Dallas have had to make adjustments when Prescott has been unavailable. Rush provided stability last season, but his departure to Baltimore leaves the team without a solid QB2.
NFL insider Ian Rapoport recently speculated that Dallas could address this issue in the draft. The real question is how soon they’re willing to pull the trigger on a quarterback. While it’s unlikely that Jerry Jones will use a first-round pick on one, the second round seems to be in play. Which brings us to Quinn Ewers, a highly promoted prospect from the Texas Longhorns.
History shows that the Cowboys’ last two franchise quarterbacks, Tony Romo and Dak Prescott, weren’t expected to take over the starting role, but thrived when given the opportunity. Taking Ewers or another quarterback in the second round could be a smart move, especially considering Dallas have no reliable backup if Prescott is injured again – something that could turn another season into a disaster.
Quinn Ewers and the NFC East Arms Race
Ewers is coming off a great season and career at Texas, where he threw for 3,472 yards, 31 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. At just 22, he has the arm talent and mobility to develop into an NFL starter. Staying in Texas would be an added bonus for the draft prospect.
The Cowboys desperately need to move forward after another disappointing season, especially with two of their division rivals making deep playoff runs. The Eagles, behind Jalen Hurts and Saquon Barkley, remain a force to be reckoned with after winning their second Super Bowl in eight years. Meanwhile, the Commanders, led by projected Rookie of the Year Jayden Daniels, are quickly becoming contenders with the free agency moves they made and plenty of cap space. Even the Giants, despite their struggles, have the No. 3 overall pick and a roster that could be dangerous with the right quarterback. If Dallas wants to keep up, making the right pick in the draft will be crucial.
