There aren’t many signs of hope for the Dallas Cowboys at the moment. 2024 first rounder Tyler Guyton recently went down with a bone fracture set to sideline him one to two months. But more important than anything is the fact that star pass-rusher Micah Parsons remains unsigned.
The team needs positive news of any kind right now, and they may be getting it from a fellow member of Parsons’ defense. Kaiir Elam, a former first round pick by the Buffalo Bills who was traded to Dallas this offseason, has been stepping up big time in training camp. After disappointing with the Bills, Elam looks to be having a career resurgence with Dallas’ strong defensive coaching staff.
Kaiir Elam showing elite cornerback instincts at Cowboys training camp
During Wednesday’s practice, Elam intercepted Dak Prescott on a poorly thrown pass then ran it back the other way. That marked his third interception thus far in training camp, which should have Cowboys coaches thrilled.
Elam having a breakout season could be huge for Dallas. Starting cornerback Trevon Diggs is still recovering from major knee surgery that has him on the PUP list and without a clear date to return. On the other side, DaRon Bland has been working as a slot cornerback at times during the summer.
Aside from those two and Elam, the team has talented third round rookie corner Shavon Revel Jr., who is close to returning but hasn’t been able to get back on the field yet due to a knee injury suffered in his final collegiate season.
Whether Elam ends up starting when all of the cornerbacks are healthy or not, if he plays up to his potential then the Cowboys will have one of the better cornerback groups in the entire NFL. That could be crucial for a defense that very well may be without Parsons for the foreseeable future.
