The exodus has begun for the Dallas Cowboys, and Dak Prescott can do little more than bid farewell to his departing teammates. Just two days into free agency, the team has already lost one of the cornerstones of its defense, with two more key players poised to follow. This turn of events has left Cowboys fans anxious and frustrated.
The painful memories of the 2024 offseason still loom large over Cowboy Nation. Despite Jerry Jones’ promises to go “all in” during free agency, the team failed to secure marquee signings and instead watched critical players walk away. This year seems to be following a similar script-though this time, Jones has refrained from making grand promises.
Instead of pursuing much-needed reinforcements, the Cowboys have already lost cornerback Jourdan Lewis. Lewis signed a lucrative three-year, $30 million contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars, which includes $20 million in guaranteed money.
Prescott’s emotional goodbye
Lewis’ departure wasn’t entirely unexpected. The standout cornerback had played the 2024 season on a one-year, $2.8 million contract and was seeking a long-term deal. When the Cowboys failed to meet his expectations, Lewis hit the open market and quickly found an ideal match with the Jaguars.
Shortly after the news broke, Prescott took to social media to express his feelings about Lewis’ exit, posting a poignant message: “The Most Deserved,” referring to Lewis’ well-earned deal with Jacksonville.
In his eight seasons with the Cowboys, Lewis racked up 275 tackles, 9.5 sacks, and 10 interceptions. In 2024, he contributed 39 tackles, one sack, and one interception to Dallas’ defense.
Who’s next to depart?
Unfortunately for Cowboys fans, Lewis may not be the only loss this offseason. Tackle Chuma Edoga is reportedly close to signing with the Jaguars, and defensive end Chauncey Golston is heading to the New York Giants.
Additionally, 14 other players-including defensive end Demarcus Lawrence, wide receiver Brandin Cooks, and running back Rico Dowdle-have entered free agency. While the Cowboys have retained 12 free agents thus far, most of these players are second- or third-stringers.
If the front office doesn’t act quickly to secure top-tier talent, this could shape up to be yet another difficult offseason for America’s Team.
