Once again, the Dallas Cowboys endured a season that ended in disappointment. But in 2024, it ended a lot earlier than usual. Dallas was eliminated from playoff contention officially right before their Week 16 game, but the team’s season felt over for a while before that. Of course, a lot of that had to do with quarterback Dak Prescott being lost for the season, but there were major warning signs even before that.

The team got blown out and embararassed in their home stadium on several occasions, prompting many to wonder if owner Jerry Jones would can head coach Mike McCarthy before the end of the season. That never happened; in fact, the Cowboys have shown resiliency without Prescott, which has led to McCarthy’s job being safer. While that may be true, nothing is set in stone, on either side.

Mike McCarthy could have other head coaching options in offseason

In a recent article in which news about the “coaching carousel” is the main topic, CBS Sports reporter Jonathan Jones gave some very interesting insight on the Cowboys’ situation. The Cowboys front office is almost all but set on bringing back McCarthy, but it’s possible he may not actually want to return.

It’s a high-pressure job for the former Super Bowl-winning head coach, and 12-win seasons aren’t good enough… There’s a belief that McCarthy, an 18-year head coach, could get another job this cycle if he chooses. He could handle the New York market, he could work with a young quarterback like Caleb Williams in a familiar division and he was the offensive coordinator in New Orleans in the pre-Sean Payton era.

It sounds like McCarthy will have options aside from the Cowboys. The potential to go to a job with less stress and pressure could be incredibly enticing for the 61-year-old. That said, it’s still likely that McCarthy will be back in Dallas.

According to sources from the Cowboys, taken from Jones’ article, McCarthy and his family “love” the area. He also has a strong relationship with Prescott, who will be back from injury and is under contract through 2028.
