The drama that follows the Dallas Cowboys is unique to any team in the NFL. Once the league’s model franchise and a dominant Super Bowl-winning force, the Cowboys have gone 29 years without appearing in the NFL’s championship game, and owner Jerry Jones has already initiated a shakeup this spring after Dallas missed the playoffs entirely in 2024.

Jones hired Brian Schottenheimer as Dallas’ new head coach, and he takes over a talented but flawed roster that fell behind the Philadelphia Eagles and the Washington Commanders in the NFC East. But his next move — and whether it involves one of Dallas’ best players — could be his biggest and boldest yet, the “wake-up call” that the Cowboys might need.

Can Dallas move up to #1?

Even though the Cowboys have gone nearly three decades without a Super Bowl crown, it has been even longer since the franchise selected #1 overall in the draft. Dallas has not picked first since 1991, two years into Jones’ ownership tenure…and at 82 years old, Jones might not want to wait much longer to draft a blue-chip prospect who can guide the Cowboys around the corner at last.

“I did have somebody tell me that the Cowboys have talked to the Titans about moving up to number one,” NFL insider Mike Florio revealed to 105.3 The Fan in Dallas. “Now I think a lot of teams talk about moving around and I don’t know if you guys have heard that. But that’s a jump and I don’t know what you would have to put into that or whether you’d have to put Micah Parsons into that package if it would go that way.”

It is no secret that the Cowboys are facing continued salary cap constraints after CeeDee Lamb and Dak Prescott scored lucrative contract extensions in 2024; Parsons, Dallas’ star edge rusher, is next on the list, as he is entering the final season of his rookie deal. The Cowboys have bristled on occasion due to Parsons’ outspoken nature, but he is among the NFL’s best players at his position and will command top dollar on the open market.

However, if Dallas cannot reach an agreement to extend his contract by the time the 2025 season starts, the Cowboys will have to entertain the prospect of dealing him, in order to avoid losing him for nothing in 2026. As Parsons is hungry for championships, a trade to Tennessee may be unappealing to him…but something will have to give sooner or later, and even if they are not acquiring the #1 overall pick from the Titans, the Cowboys could be laying the groundwork for a major move of some kind when the draft begins on April 24.
