The date has been set for the trial in the assault and strangulation case involving former New England Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs.

Diggs, who was released by the Patriots last month, faces multiple criminal charges stemming from an alleged dispute with his former private chef in 2025. On Wednesday, a pre-trial hearing was held, which the player did not attend as he was out of state.

During the session, the judge scheduled the trial to begin on May 4. Both sides also made progress on pending motions regarding the protective order, as well as text messages and emails that the defense seeks to introduce as evidence.

Diggs was formally charged in early February during a brief hearing, where he pleaded not guilty. He was subsequently released on personal recognizance with the condition that he stay away from the alleged victim.

The receiver avoided making any statements as he left the courthouse.

According to the complaint, the alleged victim – who worked as a private chef at Diggs’ home in Dedham – claims that on December 2, the two argued over an outstanding payment. She alleges that Diggs then struck her in the face and attempted to strangle her with his arm. The complaint was filed two weeks later due to the victim’s initial hesitation linked to Diggs’ fame.

Diggs has denied all the accusations.

One month after his arraignment, the Patriots decided to release him before free agency, a move that allowed the team to clear $16.8 million in salary cap space.
