The MLB offseason continues after an intense end to 2024 and in the early days of 2025 the winter market is expected to start moving, not only with the free agents available, but also with tempting trades, so that teams can finish filling their gaps.

One of the teams that got into the conversation at the start of the year is the Houston Astros, after they accepted a trade for Kyle Tucker to go to the Chicago Cubs and, it is very likely that they will not return Alex Bregman from free agency, now the name of Jose Altuve has emerged as an object of desire to be traded.

In February 2024, the Astros signed Altuve to a historic contract extension through 2029 for $125 million, which would tie him to the Texas team until he is 40 years old, a deal that in theory makes it unlikely that Jim Crane, the team’s owner, will accept a trade, at least this offseason. However, nothing guarantees that if they are not successful in 2025, the following year he could wear another jersey.

The team that wants Jose Altuve would have to let go of a lot of talent

The Astros have the budget not to suffer with the agreement without suffering from the salary cap by having to pay $32.5 million in the first year of the agreement, since they will not have to invest in retaining Tucker and Bregman, although last week they acquired the services of free agent Christian Walker, for three years and $60 million.

At 35 years of age, Altuve would still be a star signing for any team, no doubt former Astros manager AJ Hinch would like to take him to the Detroit Tigers, but they would have to let go of many prospects to convince Houston of a possible trade for the Venezuelan second baseman. However, it would not be crazy to think about Dominican pitcher Framber Valdez, who will be a free agent at the end of the 2025 season.
