Mike Tyson, known for his iconic boxing career and larger-than-life persona, has never shied away from the spotlight, even in the world of professional wrestling. But Cody Rhodes recently revealed a backstage story involving Tyson that left fans in stitches.

Speaking on the 2 Bears 1 Cave podcast, Rhodes recounted the time he was tasked with oiling up the boxing legend during an AEW event. The encounter occurred at Double or Nothing 2020, where Tyson was set to present the TNT Championship following Cody’s match. Backstage, Tyson observed other wrestlers preparing, using resistance bands and applying oil a common ritual to enhance their look under the bright lights.

Tyson, seemingly uncertain about his role, approached Rhodes with an unusual request.

“Do I need oil?” Tyson asks

Cody described Tyson as polite but slightly bewildered in the unfamiliar backstage environment. “He saw everyone oiling up and asked me, ‘Do I need oil?'” Rhodes shared. Wanting to ensure a positive interaction with the legendary boxer, Cody quickly agreed.

What followed was equal parts amusing and surreal. Tyson, who wasn’t even required to remove his shirt for the event, took it off anyway. “He handed me the oil and said, ‘You do it.’ So, there I was, oiling up one of the greatest fighters of all time,” Cody said, laughing at the memory.

A memorable highlight

Despite the oddity of the moment, Rhodes admitted it wasn’t the strangest thing he’d done backstage. “He turned around, and I oiled him up like I’ve done for other wrestlers. He looked fantastic, but the weird part was when he threw his shirt back on right after. I couldn’t help but think, ‘What was the point?'”.

Tyson’s eccentricity made the encounter unforgettable, and Rhodes looks back on it with fondness. “It’s one of those stories you treasure Mike Tyson trusting you to oil him up? That’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”

With Tyson’s unpredictable antics and larger-than-life persona, fans can only hope he makes another WWE or AEW appearance soon, perhaps at a major event like WrestleMania. Whatever the occasion, one thing is clear, Tyson always leaves a lasting impression.
