Boxing star Claressa Shields reacted to “Tank” Davis’ retirement announcement and named the two rivals who have the skills to beat him, urging him to stay to “finish what he started”.

In a move that shook the boxing world, undefeated champion Gervonta Davis announced his imminent retirement, claiming the sport was “dead”. His shocking statement, which appeared and was quickly deleted from his social media, comes just a month before a high-profile exhibition against Jake Paul in Miami. While many pointed to recent controversy as the cause of his frustration, legend Claressa Shields has weighed in with a clear message: Davis must stay, as he still has unfinished business with the lightweight elite.

Claressa Shields’ warning to Gervonta Davis

Shields, the only female boxer in history to have held world titles in four weight classes, was surprised. In an interview on the Million Dollaz Worth of Game podcast, the fighter acknowledged “out of this world skills” and Davis’ “scary” nature in the ring, but that he still has things to prove.

The boxer argued that with figures such as Shakur Stevenson, Devin Haney, Ryan Garcia and Teofimo Lopez constantly talking about him, “Tank” has an obligation to come back and defend his status. Shields claimed that if she were in a similar situation and was challenged, she would definitely fight again.

Claressa Shields says who could beat Davis

When asked who could really beat the Baltimore star, Shields was quick to point to two specific names with the necessary talent.

First, he named Shakur Stevenson, a champion with great defensive technique and intelligence in the ring. He then added Devin Haney, explaining that he “clearly can outbox him with his style”. However, he warned that if Haney gets into Davis’ punching range, the night could become “long” and dangerous.

For many experts, Davis’ retirement is premature, considering his 93% knockout power. The boxing community now awaits whether “Tank” will reconsider his decision and seek a title unification or at least a rematch with Lamont Roach Jr. before finally hanging up his gloves.

The truth is that despite the opinions of the fans, Shields’ message was clear and leaves a challenge that Davis can ignore, or accept and continue to grow his figure in boxing.
