There is no doubt that the starter in the San Francisco 49ers’ ground attack is the spectacular Christian McCaffrey, who seems to be fully recovered and ready for the upcoming season, where the team will look to contend for the NFC West title.
However, the 49ers traded Jordan Mason to the Minnesota Vikings, so it’s expected that one of San Francisco’s priorities will be to add depth to the running back position in the NFL Draft.
Cam Skattebo would be an excellent prospect who could fit perfectly into the team led by Kyle Shanahan. Additionally, the Arizona State running back is a native of California, meaning he would essentially stay home to develop in the NFL.
Skattebo Would Be the Perfect Complement to McCaffrey
Skattebo certainly has the qualities to fill the role left by Jordan Mason. With a height of 5-9 and a weight of 219 pounds, he’s ideal for what the NFL requires from a running back.
Moreover, while McCaffrey is fully recovered, he has suffered various injuries throughout his career. Last season, he sustained a calf injury at the start of the season, and later had a collateral ligament injury in his knee that caused him to miss the final part of the campaign.
Skattebo’s Impressive 2024 Season with Arizona State
In his final season as a college player, Skattebo rushed for 1,711 yards and 21 touchdowns. He also had 45 receptions for 605 yards in 12 games.
The running back is projected to be a second-round pick, and the 49ers hold the 43rd pick, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if Shanahan and company selected Cam Skattebo to add depth to the 49ers’ ground attack.
With McCaffrey and a potential addition of Skattebo, the ground attack would be spectacular next season and would give much more confidence and options to quarterback Brock Purdy, who is looking for a new contract.
