Carson Wentz never got to finish what he started in Philadelphia.
The former Eagles quarterback was on the path to an MVP-caliber season in 2017 before a knee injury ended his year, forcing him to watch from the sidelines as Nick Foles led the team to its first-ever Super Bowl victory. Years later, Wentz admits he still wonders what could have been.
Wentz opens up about missed Super Bowl moment
During a recent interview, Wentz was asked, “If you had to trade places with any quarterback in NFL history for one day, who would you pick and what would you do?”
His answer was both revealing and nostalgic.
“Wow, that’s a big question,”Wentz responded with a slight grin.
“Trade places with anyone? For a day? Well, I don’t know. I mean, I’m not gonna lie. I would love to trade places with Nick Foles and go win that Super Bowl back in the day (2018).”
Wentz’s early career with the Eagles was filled with promise.
The No. 2 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft showed immense potential, throwing for over 3,700 yards as a rookie.
His second season was even more impressive, as he passed for 33 touchdowns in just 13 games, leading the Eagles to an 11-2 record before suffering a torn ACL.
That injury ended his season and put Foles in the spotlight, ultimately leading Philadelphia to a Super Bowl win over the New England Patriots.
Despite being a key part of the Eagles’ championship season, Wentz missed out on the defining moment of his career.
His 2018 season saw him put up another 3,000-yard campaign, but back issues forced him to miss the playoffs again, as Foles once more stepped in.
Looking back, Wentz acknowledged the bittersweet nature of it all.
“After that season, that would have been a pretty cool ending to that season, but it was still pretty sweet, nonetheless,” he reflected.
Where will Wentz play in 2025?
Now, Wentz’s future is once again up in the air.
After spending the 2024 season as Patrick Mahomes’ backup in Kansas City, the 32-year-old quarterback is set to hit free agency.
The Chiefs have already signed Chris Oladokun to a reserve/future contract, signaling that Wentz may not return next season.
Though he hasn’t officially said goodbye to Kansas City, Wentz hinted at uncertainty in a recent Instagram post.
“Year 9 in the books. Grateful for another incredible year playing the game I love. Can’t wait to see what God has in store for year 10!” he wrote, sharing photos from his time with the Chiefs.
As Wentz weighs his next move, the question remains: Does he have one more shot at rewriting his NFL story?
Whether that means returning to Philly or seeking a fresh opportunity elsewhere, his dream of leading a team to Super Bowl glory isn’t over just yet.
