Since its inception as the European Cup in 1955 and its transformation into the current UEFA Champions League, the tournament has been the stage where Europe’s football giants have written their legends.

Champions League winners

For almost seven decades, the best clubs on the continent have fought for glory. Real Madrid, with 15 titles to its name, is the absolute king of the tournament, from that first edition won in 1956 to the most recent final, in which it beat Borussia Dortmund 2-0 at Wembley to win its 15th crown. It is followed by AC Milan (seven titles), Liverpool and Bayern Munich (six each) and Barcelona (five), among other historic clubs.

Over the years, the Champions League has changed its format. In its early editions it was a knockout tournament between league champions, but since the 1990s it has adopted a group stage that has made it even more competitive,

Currently, 32 teams participate in this phase, divided into eight groups. After that, a two-legged knockout round is played until the grand final.
