The boxing world is mourning the untimely death of American boxer Carson Jones, who passed away at the age of 38, following complications arose from gastrointestinal (GI) surgery.

Jones was a respected super-welterweight and was well-known for his tenacity and skill in the ring, racking up 63 fights in his career including against top fighters such as Kell Brook, Antonio Margarito, and Ted Cheeseman.

His most notable encounters were with Brook, with whom he fought twice but unfortunately lost both bouts; once by points in 2012 and again by stoppage in their 2013 rematch. Jones had earned a reputation as a formidable and durable opponent.

“Some really sad news to bring you…,” IFL TV posted to X.com, formerly Twitter. “Carson Jones, the well respected American super-welterweight who fought the likes of Kell Brook, Brian Rose & Ted Cheeseman, has sadly passed away at the age of 38 following complications during GI tract surgery.

“All of our thoughts and condolences at IFL are with Carson’s family and close friends at this difficult time.”

Tributes pour in for Jones

However, in January 2023, he began publicly sharing his struggles with gastrointestinal issues, a condition affecting the digestive tract, and informed his followers that he had been suffering significant discomfort, only being able to consume minimal amounts of food due to severe complications.

Jones‘ health deteriorated rapidly, and he announced that he would undergo surgery on his esophagus in hopes of finding relief after losing 35 pounds and admitting he could only take three bites of food per day.

But sadly condition worsened after the procedure, leading to the complications that ultimately resulted in his death and his passing has left a profound impact on the boxing community as tributes from all corners of the community come in.

“Rest in paradise to my man,” Caleb Traux said online. “Boxing lost a good one, too early.”

Whilst his manager, Sam Jones, emotionally said, “Such sad news about Carson Jones.”

British referee Mark Lyson described it as “Very sad to hear the news about the passing of Carson Jones at just 38. RIP Champ.”
