Fabio Capello has been retired from coaching since 2018, but experience is a plus and he continues to analyse the world of football. He also has no qualms about giving his opinion, whoever the protagonist may be.
This is the case of Cristiano Ronaldo, whom Capello recognises as enormously talented, but not enough to put him on the table with those he considers to be the best: “Cristiano is a great goalscorer and an incredible athlete, but he does not have the genius of Messi, Maradona or Ronaldo Nazario,” the Italian told Egyptian channel ON Sport’s ‘Hat-Trick’ programme.
“That genius that the others had is absent in Cristiano. You can’t compare him with those three,” said Capello, who also praised Barca’s “beautiful and very entertaining football”. But he also spoke of their ‘defects’: “Barca’s weakness is their constant reliance on offside. Sometimes, by a few centimetres, you find the opponent alone in front of the goal.”
Ronaldo Nazario was a negative leader who organised huge parties and didn’t want to train
Capello also spoke about the ego and personality of the players. He, who has extensive experience managing dressing rooms with great footballers, remembered the ‘problem’ he had at Real Madrid: “RonaldoNazario was a negative leader who organized huge parties and did not want to train”.
The coach sees similar problems with the Real Madrid of today with gestures such as Mbappe asking his teammates not to make a guard of honor to Barcelona after losing the Spanish Super Cup: “That means that the coach no longer has power or leadership.”
He also had words about the moment Bellingham is experiencing in the Madrid team, where he has lost prominence: “With Ancelotti he had more freedom of movement. Now it seems that he has his wings clipped, he is stagnant.”
