In only 10 days, the boxing world will be blessed with one of the most highly anticipated fights in recent times. Canelo Alvarez will do battle with Terence Crawford in a fight between two of the best pound-for-pound fighters in recent boxing history.

Given both boxers’ skills and track records, this one is considered a toss-up by many. Alvarez has the weight advantage, despite Crawford looking strong since hitting the higher designated weight needed. Preparations are currently in full swing on both sides, but there is a particular spotlight on Alvarez’s camp for a surprising reason: he has been sparring with Jaron “Boots” Ennis.

Teddy Atlas doesn’t like Canelo Alvarez tiring himself out by sparring Jaron Ennis

Canelo’s decision to do so is simply to get him training with an elite boxer, so that he’s fully ready to face Crawford. But not everyone is in love with the move. Legendary boxing analyst Teddy Atlas believes the decision could backfire for the Mexican. Atlas thinks fighting against a guy like Ennis could wear Alvarez out heading into September 13.

I don’t want him to leave it in the gym. I don’t want him to get in that kind of war in the gym. I wouldn’t want wars with my guy who has been in 65 fights… I would pick spots for Canelo with one or two days to amp him up, but it would only be spots with someone that sharp.

Atlas is concerned about Alvarez’s age catching up to him. Crawford is actually older, but Canelo has more tread on his tires. Sparring with Ennis is only adding more rounds to his body. It will be interesting to see if Alvarez shows any signs of fatigue on fight night.
