Rumors of a possible showdown between Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford in mid-September are growing stronger, largely due to the new contract that the Mexican fighter is about to sign a multi-million dollar contract with Arab Sheikh Turki Alalshikh.
Alalshikh himself said a year ago that he was not interested in financing the fight between Canelo and Crawford, after the Mexican pointed out that to fight against that opponent he would demand a minimum profit of $150 million.
But now things look different, to the extent that Canelo and Alalshikh met in London last week to hold an especially productive negotiation for the Mexican fighter.
“Canelo is in the process of signing a 3-fight deal with @Turki_alalshikh, which will include a mega fight with @TerenceCrawford in September,” said renowned boxing analyst Rick Glaser, a member of the New York State Boxing Hall of Fame.
That would make the fight one of the most anticipated in the boxing world in 2025.
Despite the fact that many talk about the disadvantage that Crawford could have due to the weight difference between the two boxers, up to 14 pounds, Glaser himself pointed out that Crawford has confidence in his skills to compete in a higher weight category.
He also indicated that the Nebraska southpaw had “accepted a no-rehydration clause”, which would potentially give him a better chance against a bigger opponent like Canelo.
The separation between Canelo and PBC
Early last year, reports emerged that Alvarez and Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) had mutually agreed to part ways. The $100 million three-fight deal reportedly ended due to disagreements over a possible Cinco de Mayo fight against Jermall Charlo, reported essentiallysports.com.
Álvarez had defeated Charlo’s brother, Jermell, a few months earlier, on September 30, 2023.
For now, it is clear that Canelo is getting closer and closer to the biggest boxing platform today.
If the fight against Crawford goes ahead, the question would be the direction the Mexican fighter will take afterwards, and whether he will finally decide to fight against David Benavidez, which is a fight that most fans have been waiting for several months.
What is certain is that the Canelo-Riyadh Season partnership could offer some of the most memorable fights in recent times.
