Next Saturday David Benavidez will fight David Morrell, a rival he chose after Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez refused to give him a chance for his super middleweight titles, despite being the official challenger of the WBC. This has provoked a war of words to pressure Canelo and they have reached the point of accusing him of being afraid of ‘Red Flag’, especially after demanding a purse of between 150 and 200 million dollars to accept to get into the ring against him.
Canelo Alvarez claims that he has earned the right to choose his opponents, while there are many experts and people related to boxing who believe that he only faces easy opponents.
Despite all these differences, Essentially Sports found a similarity between Canelo and the so-called ‘Mexican Monster’ and it is in their vision of boxing and how to manage their career.
While the boxing prospect for David Benavidez is not far removed from that of the Guadalajara pugilist, he gave his opinion in an interview with ‘All The Smoke’ when asked why he accepted to be the co-main event of the card headlined by Gervonta Davis vs. Frank Martin in June 2024.
“I always tell young fighters, ‘Hey, don’t look at boxing just for the money. The money comes. Do your thing, do it well and with discipline, with love, with everything and the money will come,'” Canelo told The Ring Magazine in a recent interview.
“The only reason I did it is because I’m a boxing fan… I know how much it means to have two great fighters on a card. I didn’t really care about being the co-main event or whatever, I just thought it would be a cool night for the fans,” Benavidez told ‘All The Smoke’.
Canelo has three rivals to choose from
During an appearance on the show Buen Morning on RECORD+, Mauricio Sulaiman, president of the World Boxing Council, revealed that Sheikh Turki Alalshikh gave Canelo Alvarez three possible opponents to choose from.
“At the moment he has no obligation, any official challenger, and he was in London at a very special dinner, he was with his excellency Turki Alalshikh, who is the great leader of boxing in this new movement Riyadh Season, and there they put on the table three different rivals, I do not know what will be Saul’s decision, we are waiting for what is going to happen,” Sulaiman revealed.
