It is no secret that Saul Alvarez’s fortune amounts to a nine-digit figure and he is one of the people in Mexico with the economic means to buy a Liga MX soccer team. A few years ago, he was linked as a potential buyer of Chivas Guadalajara. However, it was nothing more than speculation. Now, the Guadalajara-born boxer has been linked with another team from the capital of Jalisco: Atlas.
However, now it would not be a solitary purchase, but rather it would be together with the singer Peso Pluma. July 15, 2025 will mark a precedent in Orlegi’s administration with Atlas. That day the start of the sale process was made official, which caused a wave of rumors about the future of the club and possible buyers. In the last few hours, the “candidates of the people” appeared, those characters related to the club and who consider, because of their affection for the institution and the purchasing power they have, are able to make an offer.
Where did Peso Pluma come from as a candidate to buy Atlas?
The reality is that at the moment it is a dream of La Fiel members, although there are words from the singer that give hope that it may be possible. In 2024, Peso Pluma expressed his interest in collaborating in some way with Liga MX, especially with Atlas, thanks to the fact that in addition to music, one of his greatest passions is soccer, since since he was a child he has had a deep love for this sport.
“Since I was a child, I remember that I always went to the Atlas stadium, I went to what is the Barra 51, which is the group that sings the songs of Atlas, it was always good. At some point I got more involved in the sport and in my team”. The entry of foreign capital through investment funds is another of the speculations that have been mentioned; especially because of the interest of this type of financial entities to enter fully into the Liga MX market.
What other entrepreneurs could acquire the Atlas franchise?
In fact, there is currently no formal interest in taking over Atlas; if there were, “Moelis & Company, ADS and Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP”, the companies hired to carry out the process, would have to get down to work as they are in charge of the transaction and transition. At the local level, the name of Alfonso Urrea, a well-known businessman from Guadalajara and close to the people of Orlegi Sports, is another one that appeared on the scene, understanding the affection he has for the institution and the role he already plays in the current board.
“Foy” Urrea is one of the members of Atlas’ Sports Council, responsible for sitting in on decisions regarding the first team and currently composed of himself, Alejandro Irarragorri, Jose Riestra, Anibal Fajer and Eduardo Herrera. The reality is that the profile of the buyer must understand what Atlas means not only in Liga MX, but also to get to know the context and potential of the club, both in sporting and social terms.
