We’re almost a month away from the NFL Draft, which will be held at the legendary Lambeau Field, home of the Green Bay Packers. Lambeau was the first stadium built specifically for an NFL team and remains one of the few that has never sold its naming rights to a corporation. This will be the first time in the joint draft era that every team will own its first-round pick to start the new league year, so teams will have plenty of pieces to move when draft day arrives.
For now, the Tennessee Titans are on the clock, and they need a new quarterback-among many other roster holes-which leads many, myself included, to believe that Cam Ward, the top QB prospect, could become the 40th quarterback selected first overall out of the 96 No. 1 picks in NFL Draft history. He would also be the third Miami player ever taken first overall, the first since defensive tackle Russell Maryland in 1991, and only the second Hurricanes QB after Vinny Testaverde in 1987. However, the Titans could receive a trade offer from a team inside the top 10 and still land their franchise QB.
Are the Saints Preparing a Bold Move?
That team could be the New Orleans Saints, who despite currently having Derek Carr – one of the top 15 highest-paid players in NFL history – as their starter, have gone just 14-13 with him in two seasons in Louisiana. The reality is that Cam Ward has already expressed interest in playing for the Saints, saying: “It would be a dream of mine to play for them if I get a chance someday. But that’s not really my focus right now.” Ward made the comment after meeting with Saints officials last month at the NFL Combine and while accepting the Manning Award Monday night in New Orleans.
New Saints head coach Kellen Moore is another reason Ward would love to land in New Orleans. The QB prospect praised him, saying:
If you get a chance to go play for a Super Bowl-winning coach like Coach Moore, he knows how to dial up the playbook.
It wouldn’t be surprising to see the Saints offer Carr and their first-round pick to the Titans in exchange for the No. 1 pick. However, the reality is that Tennessee is unlikely to accept, as adding Carr wouldn’t significantly change their situation. Instead, the Titans should start fresh with a rookie QB like Ward, who was a Heisman finalist last season, completing 67.2% of his passes for 4,313 yards, 39 touchdowns and just 7 interceptions for the Hurricanes.
