Transforming from being a fan of one team to being a professional athlete for another in the NFL is a complex process, but Cam Skattebo, considered by many to be one of the most physical and talented rookie running backs available, made a very strange decision to focus 100% on the New York Giants.

For the 2025-26 season, Cam Skattebo will travel from his native California to New York City. The literal coast-to-coast journey where he will join superstar wide receiver Malik Nabers, talented running back Tyrone Tracy Jr and his fellow 2025 NFL Draft pick, QB Jaxson Dart, in the offensive unit. But what has Skattebo done to leave behind his passion for the San Francisco 49ers to dedicate himself body and soul to the New York jersey?

The decision to leave his past behind to focus on the New York Giants

Cam Skattebo gave an interview for the podcast “St. Brown Podcast” with Amon-Ra and Equanimeous St. Brown on May 28, where he made it clear that he was originally a fan of the San Francisco 49ers. “I grew up a lifelong 49ers fan,” he said. However, after not being selected by the Bay Area team, Skattebo revealed that his brother changed his 49ers gear for that of the New York Giants.

In the last NFL Draft, San Francisco did not sign Cam Skattebo and he revealed a conversation he had with his brother immediately after receiving the news of his recruitment with the Big Apple team: “We’re going to burn all our 49ers clothes. Now we’re Giants fans,” said the new New York running back, who during his time at Arizona State in 2024-25 had 1,711 yards, 21 touchdowns and 45 receptions on the ground. He also contributed 605 yards and three touchdowns through the air.

What can Cam Skattebo bring to New York?

Cam Skattebo is fast and agile, a very physical runner, an excellent receiver and blocker. He should form a solid duo with Tracy in New York’s backfield, who had an excellent season last year as the Giants’ starter.

Cam Skattebo is currently the third running back on the Giants’ roster, behind Tracy and veteran Devin Singletary. However, at this stage of his career, it would not be surprising to see Singletary playing more of a secondary role and in a lower position on the roster by the start of the 2025 season.
