After nearly eight months away from competitive action, Caitlin Clark is finally set to return to the basketball court. The Indiana Fever guard, one of the most recognizable young stars in women’s basketball, is preparing to make her senior national team debut with Team USA in the upcoming FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup qualifying tournament.
For Clark, the moment represents both a personal milestone and a long-awaited return after an injury-filled stretch that kept her sidelined for much of the past year.
The former Iowa Hawkeyes standout had a promising start to her campaign with the Indiana Fever last season before injuries derailed her momentum.
In 13 games, Clark averaged 16.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 8.8 assists and 1.6 steals per game, showcasing the all-around playmaking ability that made her one of college basketball’s most electrifying players.
Her season was cut short in dramatic fashion on July 15 during a victory over the Connecticut Sun.
In the final minute of that game, Clark suffered a groin injury that forced her out of the lineup and ultimately prevented her from finishing the season with the Indiana Fever.
The setbacks didn’t end there. In August, Clark sustained a bone bruise in her left ankle during a workout, further delaying her return to the court.
It raised questions about when fans would see her playing again. Now, however, the wait is finally over.
A long-awaited debut for Team USA
Clark has been named to the 12-player roster for Team USA at this month’s FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup qualifying tournament.
The event will take place in San Juan, Puerto Rico from March 11-17 and will feature several international matchups as teams battle for spots in the global tournament.
For Clark, the opportunity represents a dream realized: “Oh, it’s going to be amazing. Like, as a kid this is what you grow up watching. So obviously, I’ve watched a lot of really great players and now I think it’s kind of like going to be a pinch me moment,” she said.
The Fever guard reflected further on the significance of the opportunity, noting that her previous experiences with junior national teams helped prepare her for this stage.
“this is kind of what you dream of & obviously as being somebody that’s played for three junior national teams, you know, not many kids that had that opportunity get this opportunity, so just super grateful.”
While Clark became famous for wearing her No. 22 jersey during her college career with the Iowa Hawkeyes and with the Fever, she has been assigned the No. 12 jersey this time.
When is Caitlin Clark and Team USA playing?
The tournament will begin with Team USA facing Senegal on March 11, a matchup that marks Clark‘s first appearance with the senior national team.
The game is scheduled to tip off at 17:00 ET / 14:00 PT and will be broadcast on truTV.
Following the opener, Clark and Team USA are expected to face Puerto Rico on Thursday in another key qualifying matchup.
