The Iowa Hawkeyes are gearing up for what will be a historic moment for the program, as they are set to lift Caitlin Clark’s jersey into the rafters and retire it.
After spending four seasons with the Hawkeyes from 2020 to 2024, it’s safe to say that Clark exceeded all the lofty expectations that were placed on during her stay.
“There will never be another 22,” Iowas wrote on their X profile after Clark confirmed she would be joining the pro ranks in the WNBA.
It’s a huge honor for Clark, as no other Hawkeye will ever wear her number again, joining two other Iowa women’s basketball greats – Megan Gustafson and Michelle Edwards.
While the official ceremony won’t take place until February 2, it seems Iowa couldn’t wait to retire the No.22 as it was already hanging in the rafters for the first game of the current season. That only pushed fans to call for the official ceremony to take place as soon as possible.
The ceremony is more than deserved for Clark after finishing her collegiate career as the all-time NCAA scoring leader (3,951 points), the all-time women’s basketball leader in three-pointers made (548) and Iowa’s all-time assists leader (1,144). She also led Iowa to back-to-back national championship appearances in 2023 and 2024.
“I’m forever proud to be a Hawkeye, and Iowa holds a special place in my heart that is bigger than just basketball,” said Clark about how much the honor means to her.
“It means the world to me to receive this honor and to celebrate it with my family, friends, and alumni. It will be a great feeling to look up in the rafters and see my jersey alongside those that I’ve admired for so long.”
