The Detroit Lions handed the Tampa Bay Buccaneers a tough 24-9 defeat on Monday Night Football at Ford Field on October 20.
Baker Mayfield, who threw for 228 yards, one touchdown pass, and one interception, was unable to stop the Lions, who demonstrated their power at home. However, the QB received high praise from a WNBA star.
Mayfield praised by sports icon
Recently, the 30-year-old quarterback spoke to the press and shared his thoughts on how the narratives surrounding him and his game have changed over the years:
“Early on in my career, it was seen as cocky, immature, now it’s moxie, he’s a dog, so it’s same s***t different day as long as you play well they change the narrative but you just got to be yourself and I have always been like that,” he expressed. “At the core, [I’m] definitely the same. Mature in different ways, not worried about the little things that really don’t matter,” Mayfield explained.
These words were shared by the official Instagram account of @sportsillustrated, and Los Angeles Sparks legend Candace Parker didn’t hesitate to post them in her stories.
The former Chicago Sky and Las Vegas Aces player accompanied Mayfield’s video with three key words that hinted at Parker’s admiration for the Bucs star: “That’s my QB,” she wrote alongside three talking head emojis.
This greeting is no small thing, coming from the WNBA icon, and even less so amid conversations about the race for the NFL MVP. With a total of 1,767 passing yards and one touchdown, his performances have led the team to a 5-2 record early in the season, despite the recent loss.
Meanwhile, the Bucs will travel to the Caesars Superdome, where they will look to recover from the Lions’ tough loss to the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, October 26.
